Growing up, I always looked forward to Fridays. Not only was it the last day of school for the week before the weekend would start but it was also the night I would always go to Blockbuster Video and try to rent that new release that just came out. It was something I would usually do every weekend and always something I felt I looked forward to doing. It was also a very hit or miss experience because I never knew if they would be Sold Out of the movie I wanted to rent until I would arrive to the store to rent it. Getting lucky and grabbing the New Release I wanted was the best feeling and always part of my Friday night jam. Whether I got Lucky or not, I would always walk out with a bunch of candy or a video game or two and always enjoyed that Blockbuster experience. Having Blockbuster less than a mile away from my house was also awesome to have and is one of the things I miss most about my childhood.
Today, the convenience of finding the movie I want to watch and clicking a button is as easy as possible. Between Theaters, Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, Disney Plus and iTunes I am surrounded with every possible way of watching what I want at the exact time I want without much work involved. The glory days of renting movies in person and Blockbuster are over and the digital age has really taken over. But, is this rapid advancement of technology moving too fast and do we want this continuation of technology for the future to really continue? Do we want absolutely everything to become easier with just a click of a button, snap of our fingers or the sound of our voice? Between Alexa, Siri, Netflix, Smart Phones and constant Messages, It feels like sometimes this advancement of Technology has just made life more complicating and not as simple as I once remembered it.
It’s been a while since I have last written here and have been wanting to sit down to write again. This year certainly has had its share of ups and downs and while we are still facing multiple challenges I have been thinking more and more about this concept this week. While, It certainly has been cool to see where technology has taken us today and I love being able to click a button and watch my favorite film. But honestly speaking, I would be lying if I didn’t say sometimes I miss those glory days. The Blockbuster experience was always one of the highlights of my week and sometimes I wish we could just rewind time.
I recently saw someone at Target with a “Be Kind, Please Rewind” T-Shirt and it made me think of this some more. While Blockbuster used this slogan as a way to encourage customers to rewind films before returning, It made me think of what Rewinding the Past might look like in my life. While I am finally pretty happy where my Life is right now, I have to admit I have had my good share of regret, struggles and remorse for having certain feelings, comparing myself to others or seeing myself behind the norm of others and always struggled with wanting to rewind the past. Unfortunately, rewinding the past wasn’t an option but staying busy always seemed like the right solution and way to avoid my truth and I spent several years doing so and thinking it was my best approach. What I have concluded is being Thankful and showing Thankfulness, Taking each experience day by day and celebrating the people you love every step of the way is the best approach to Living! Today, I am grateful for each and everyone who has played a part in my life and continues to do so and have guided me in the right direction of where I am now. Rewinding the past would look very different today if I hadn’t experienced what I experienced and am Thankful to God where and how he has brought me now and continues to use me in.
Thoughts to Consider:
- Would you want to rewind the past? If so how would you use the past to change your future or your perspective?
- How can we have a balance between Technology and our Spiritual Mind? How can we use Technology not as a distraction?
- While many say Blockbuster struggled because they failed to keep up with Technology the last remaining Blockbuster in Oregon seems pretty popular? What do people miss so much about this? Are we longing for community or just trying to relive the past?
- Sometimes obsessing with regrets and the past will prevent you from growing and continuing your future. How can we make ourselves at peace with the past in order to move on and live new glory days?
- Ultimately, God is in control and while many things might happen for a reason God can use any situation for his glory and kingdom…even the ones you might be ashamed of or afraid of admitting.

This week was a pretty historical week for Americans and the world. While the Winter Olympics started off with a sign of hope for peace and unity, the world watched as SpaceX launched the most powerful rocket since the 1970’s and we now have a car in space. The role of social media has played a large part of this endeavor and I find it fascinating to see where our technology can take us. Today, I am excited to see more signs of exploration but we must remember to have boundaries between that technology and our daily lives if we truly want to live. Do we really need a sign at the beach saying they don’t have wifi? Are we really expecting beaches, national parks, and mountain ranges to provide Free Wifi? I don’t know about you but I don’t want to see it come to that. While I love my iPhone, Social Media and the ability to have information at my fingers I also want to reflect on greater encounters of life and sometimes turn off all the noise.
